Apartment herb garden – indoor or porch?
I want to start a small container herb garden (basil, chives, oregano, cilantro & mint); I do have a porch but neither it nor my kitchen window get direct sunlight (they face North), though they do get plenty of indirect light.
Would it make a difference whether I choose to keep them on the windowsill or the porch?
Also, any hints/tips on growing herbs in containers? I live in Los Angeles, so snow is not a problem if I choose to grow on the porch, hehe.
Thanks!

try growing this
It should not matter, however if I were you I would put duplicates on the porch and the other set on the window sill keep a journal and see how well each does. This way you’ll be ahead of the game for the next growing season. Part of the joys of gardening, journaling and a little trial and error.
Distinguish between perennial herbs and annual herbs.
Try to avoid over watering but be aware potted plants need more watering on average, give them a little osmote (found at your favorite garden center) every 25 days so they can feed.
Make sure the drainage holes are not clogged and turn them ever so often if left on the window sill because they will grow in the direction of the sun.
You should be very successful with mint and basil. Easy to grow. Parsley and evergreen onions or chives look well potted together and seem to like growing together.
This should be fun for you, I’m excited!
Welcome to the fabulous world of gardening!

Herbs prefer full sun. You may be able to grow them on the patio, but expect them to be leggy.
Oregano is perennial, the others are annual. Basil cuttings will root in clear containers of water.
