Basil plants, what is the best way to pick the leaves?

I purchased a a clump of basil that is rooted in the produce section of the market. Can I leave it in water indefinitely or should I plant it in soil? How should the leaves be plucked to keep it growing indefinitely?
I am going to keep it the kitchen(Hopefully) they tend to go to seed, do I cut the top of the stems off?

i would plant it into soil; it just works better. as for cutting the leaves, you should cut them right where the end of the leaf meets the stem.

Pinch or cut the leaves with scissors at the stem.
It will keep fresh in water for a short time; planting will last longer.

plant it in dirt and just pinch the leaves off at the stem,
just watch out for pests that may eat it. i had something in my herb garden that ate all of my basil and sage.

Pinch off just the top of each stalk, maybe an inch or so of it.
I’ve grown my own too, and found it best to use some of the potting soil for vegetable gardens, or organic potting soil.
You want to make sure you aren’t putting chemicals into your bod any more than necessary.
Good luck!
