Can a rosemary plant survive a NJ winter?
My mom has 2 huge rosemary plants in 2 large pots (each pot is approx 30″)
They are outside in her back yard and are too large to bring in.
Is there anything she can do for them to survive the winter?
Thanks for your help and advice.

im from ocean city and it doesn’t get that cold, if your right on a bay or the ocean your plant should be fine, if you are more inland it is colder and the plant could die, but it could also grow back
the best thing to do is p-lant them in the ground by the house. also it is according to where you live in nj. northwest nj may hae a problem getting rosemary to surivie unless planted in a microclimate. the coast of nj from sand hook to cape may wont have a problem but should be planted by the house for added protection from wind, and warmth. southern n should have no problem at all.
rosemary is cold hardy to zone 7a which means absolute average mimimal temperatures on the coldest night of the year is 0-5 degrees. 1 is the lowest zone which means -50 degrees, zone 11 is tropical and the highest zone. mimimal temps here are 40 degrees or above. the coast of nj is a solid zone 7, extreme southern nj is a zone 7b, but northwest nj is a zone 6b, and some of northwest nj is a zone 6a.
roesmary should be okay overall. if you lie in northwest nj put a tarp over it on the coldest nights. this may be a cold winter for the eastern states so you may se 5 degrees in nj.
good luck
I rake all the leaves over and around the plants and keep them up against a wall with southern sun. If it is going to be really freezing cold for days, I cover them with a towel. Works for me.
YES.
They will survive just fine if you do not let the soil dehydrate – which will dehydrate the rosemary through reverse osmosis. The soil will remove whatever moisture there is in the plants, killing them.
Container plants need to be treated and maintained slightly different than those growing in your garden.
