Can eating poppy seeds really cause you to fail a drug test?

I know this is kind of a silly question, but I am wondering because I am leaving for air force basic training soon and I will be having to take a drug test. I bought salad dressing today, and didn’t realize until I got home that it contains poppy seeds. Is this just a myth, or is there any truth to it?

They tested this on mythbusters before. You would need to eat an unhealthy amount of poppy seeds.

I mean you would need to eat an insane amount. You should be fine.If you want to be extra safe then don’t use the salad dressing.

Good luck with your air force training=)

Yes it can depending on the quantity ingested. Let them know and if it is positive for opiates then insist on a GCMS confirmatory test (it will be able to determine that it was from poppies). It will be positive for approx. 72 hours.

Mythbusters tested that one a while ago and confirmed it:

MYTH: Eating poppy seed bagels or poppy seed cake can cause one to test positive for heroin and/or opium on a drug test.
STATUS: Confirmed
NOTES: Heroin is a semi-synthetic opiate made from Morphine. If a test is sensitive enough it can generate a false positive simply by detecting the poppy seeds. Lawsuits have actually been filed and settled due to this phenomenon.

Yeah, it could happen, but you would need to eat an insane amount of them.

Yes it will cause you to fail a drug test. In nursing school we acyually tested this by eating the poppy seeds and doing a home drug test and it tested positive for everyone that had eaten the seeds.
