Can I use celery seeds instead of caraway seeds?

I have a german-type recipe with meat and cabbage that calls for caraway seeds, but I only have celery seeds. Will this substitution work?

I think so. I use a lot of celery seed in German-style cabbage or potato dishes, and it works well.

I would definately use If you don’t have caraway….I recomend pepper corns or mustard seeds.

You could substitute celery seeds, but it will result in a completely different flavor. If you have any cumin seed, that would actually be perfect because it is the most similar to caraway seeds. You could also use star anise, sesame seeds, or anise seeds to produce a similar flavor.

The flavor will be TOTALLY different. Do you have fennel? that would be the closest substitute.

sure, but it won’t have the authentic German flavor of the caraway. But, alot of people don’t like caraway:) …. You might not want to use as much though; celery seed can be quite strong….

not at all, fennel seeds might not be too bad

I love that dish!!! but…………..I hate caraway seeds, I always leave them out!!
