Can poppy seeds on a hot dog bun show up positive in a drug test?

I ate a hot dog with poppy seeds on the bun on Wednesday and I had to take a drug test today (Friday) for a federal job that I currently work for. I heard that poppy seeds can falsely cause you to fail a drug test. Is this true? Now I’m worried about losing my job over a hot dog.

I would not worry. Other people that posted were right about quantity – you would need to consume quite a bit of poppy seeds. Because poppy seeds are common in diets, the industry cutoff level has been established to take that into consideration. Additionally, if for some reason you ate an entire poppy seed cake which would probably be reflected as positive in a drug test, the lab can then double-check for thebaine, which is found in poppy seeds but not opiate drugs.

I have heard of poppy seeds causing a false positive, but you would probably need to eat a lot of them.

yea my uncle cant eat food with that stuff in it cuz at his work they give random drug test and they say it on this little packet that they gave him

Yes they can cause a positive for drugs, but not 2 after eating them

Not that small amount. Food Network’s “Food Detectives” did a test, and it took a lot of poppy seed bagels (I think it was more than 10) in a day to show up as anything on the drug test. A hot dog bun has a lot fewer poppy seeds than even one bagel, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Dont worry you’d have to eat a lot

it shouldnt .. unless you ate a ton of them lol

Two things need to be considered in this situation. First, the quantity of poppy seeds you’ve eaten and when you ate them. Second, how big is your pay check. You had a very small amount of seeds over 48 hours before your drug test, which would be hard to trace under standard circumstances. But if your pay scale is high enough to warrant a more expensive test, well they can tell you the quality of the pot you smoked ten years ago, if you know what I mean. If you’re an the lower end of the pay scale it’s usually not worth it to your employer dig too deep. So relax.

However, if you do get a false positive – explain what happened and ask for a retest. I bet you could get one.

It’s one thing if you eat one every day, another if it is a one time thing and it was that recent, don’t worry.
