Can spices counteract each other?

I love learning new recipes and such, but I’m afraid my spice rack is a bit wanting. I don’t have access to some of the spices needed for such things like coatings for chicken breasts. I want to make things full of flavor, but I guess my question is, are there spices that will drown out the flavor of other spices in the batch (i.e. will garlic counteract basil or dill)?

It al depends….some spices if you put the right amount will bring out wonderful flavors. I am puerto rican and we grown this leaf that is put in this amazing spice called sofrito…it has sweet chil peppers, garlic, onions, recao(which is grown in PR) oil and a couple other things and it is blended together and you can use with anything. Thats an example of different spices put together…if you were to put dill and oregano together the dill might drown out the oregano because it is slightly stronger. you have to experiment with different spices and see if you can find a balance…

One spice can definitely overpower another. Like dill, and fennel for example are very strong so you wouldn’t go mixing it with a bunch of other spices. Usually basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, and garlic all complement eachother. You really just have to experiment, and find out which you like.
