will poppy seeds found at your average grocery store grow when planted? is there any special measure that needs to be taken prior to planting, such as soaking the seeds, for example?

you may be able to plant them, but before you buy them, to check if they have been heat treated, or freeze dryed.

Most of the ones I have seen were toasted, so they would not likely germinate. This enhances the flavor to most peoples liking, and discourages planting.

Yes most of the brands of Poppy Seeds can be planted and do grow. Just do not let the Cops find out. According to Mother Earth News, They are the type that they harvest opium from, and are legal to sell and use in cooking, but not to plant. That is illegal. Most people do not know that those seeds can do that. Do not remember which copy of the magazineit was in but it probably could be found in their archives

yes,you can plant them.their germanating percentage isn’t very good.and they don’t transplant very well,so besure to put the seeds where you know you want them.
