Cucumber slices with a Dill flavor white dressing? Anyone know about this?
back when I was little, in the early 1970′s my mom used to make this salad for her dinner parties that was just peeled and sliced cucumbers and some dill sauce drizzled on top, this is pre-ranch dressing days I believe, but it was very much like it only REALLY dill flavored, I would love to find out if anyone knows what this was or how to make something close to it, my mom just doesnt have the memory of how she made it anymore. and I have tryed taking ranch and adding dill seed to it, but its not the right flavor.
thanks you to anyone that can help me.

its called tdziki sauce its made with greek yogurt cucumber abd dill. go on the food network and search for gyros. or go to your local greek restaurant and buy some togo
It’s called Tzatziki. A greek recipe.
Here’s the classic recipe:
1 cup grated seeded peeled cucumber
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 cup plain fat-free yogurt
1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint
2 teaspoons chopped fresh dill
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 garlic cloves, minced
preparation
Place cucumber on several layers of paper towels; sprinkle with 1/8 teaspoon salt. Let stand 30 minutes.
Combine cucumber, yogurt, and remaining ingredients, stirring until well blended. Refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving.
Of course, you can try all sorts of variations on this recipe. Diferent sized pieces of cucumber, add pepper or other seasoning etc.
Remember, to get that dill flavour, it must be fresh, and freshly chopped!!!
Hope this helps you gain back your memories.
It probably had a sour cream base, with no buttermilk which is a hallmark of most ranch dressings. try dill pickle juice and some chopped dill pickles either sweet or garlic according to your tastes and a squeeze of lemon juice or even Tabasco or worchestershire sauce. You’ll need to fiddle around a little to get that exact flavor you remember I’d use some scallions too unless you are like me and enjoy a stronger onion flavor.
Three people beat me to it. Sorry. The recipe sounds good, doesn’t it? I think the Greek restaurant is a good idea too.
DILL CUCUMBERS
4-6 lg. cucumbers
2 tomatoes, quartered (optional)
1 (8 oz.) tub sour cream
1/2 tsp. dill, crushed, dried
1 green onion, sliced (optional)
Lightly peel cucumbers so they’re green and white stripe. Slice 1/8 inch thick.
In bowl mix sour cream and dill until creamy. Add cucumbers to sour cream mixture. Quartered tomatoes and sliced green onion can be added if desired.
There are other recipes at the link below.
We refer ro ours as cucumbers in sour cream. Our dressing is 1 cup Sour Cream with 1 to 2 Tbs. red wine vinegar, 1 to 2 tsp. dill weed and 1 tsp. sugar. Sometimes I also add fresh parsley and either green onions or red onions. A friend of mine uses lemon juice instead of the red wine vinegar.
Your mom’s salad sounds similar to Tzatziki, a Greek dip/spread made from grated cucumber. However since it is a salad, simply make the sauce using Tzatziki ingredients consisting of Greek-style yoghurt (strained), fresh/dried dill, garlic paste, lemon juice, salt and extra virgin olive oil and drizzle over the cucumber slices. Hope this helps.
good question femma, i am copying the answers. we can always use new ideas over here.
