For Anti – Medicine and Traditional Doctor Mothers?
I have treated just about any sickness that I have had in my adult life with herbs and supplements, and I use a few herbs with Emma (namely catnip and fennel for calming and digestion). My concern is what to do when she gets sick. Did you give your baby “doctor’s medicine” such as antibitotics (I am so scared of a reaction or yeast breakout) or did you attempt non traditional ways first.

it just depends, the ONLY thing my kid’s have had an antibiotic for is strep, and one ear infection. Although the ear infections were many, most go away on their own. Most are viral and antibiotics won’t help… If you do have to have antibiotics you can take probiotics to keep from getting a yeast breakout.
Antibiotics is the only treatment for Strep throat.
Antibiotics is the only/primary treatment for Pneumonia
My son got both of those before his first birthday.
The medications are out there for a reason.
Well, luckily I haven’t faced this issue! Neither of my girls had had any infections at all that required antibiotics, despite my feeding them the dreaded formula! lol
That being said, I think I am leaning more toward holistic or old fashioned medicine. They had thrush as newborns treated with gentian violet. That ended up turning into yeast rashes and rather than get an entirely new medicine, I treated that with gentian violet too! Maya recently picked up ringworm *GROSS* and I treated that with gentian violet and it’s gone.
Sure, I could have ran her to the pediatrician and been told to get 3 different OTC medicines that all do the same thing, but why? GV does as good of a job and it turns her skin a fun purple!
That being said, if either of them had an infection in which the doc recommended antibiotics, I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to give them and if they did get a yeast breakout, well, my purple friend would make a reappearance!
im not totally anti traditional medicine but i do love herbal and homeopathic remedies. my son had a slight ear infection which caused him to have a fever. i used breastmilk in his ears but it wasnt helping much and then i turned to antibiotic. he had a reaction to amoxicillin, which i didnt know daddy was allergic to. it wasnt a bad reaction just small hives on his abck though. then we stopped all antibiotics and a few weeks later his ear infection was still there. so we went with omnicef- he had a reaction then but we didnt know whether it wa sa vaccine reaction or to the meds. so i stopped all meds and it did go away on it’s own. maybe we’ll find out if he is really allergic to the other one eventually
Well, I paniced with her first ear infection and gave in to antibiotics…. long story short she had a SEVER yeast rash soon after. I will DEFINITELY try alternative methods first from now on, I don’t know why I second guessed myself at all. Just be confident and follow your instincts
First is just to let the body heal itself.
Next I try natural treatments (PS Gentian violet isn’t really natural )
On occasion I have used over the counter meds like a decongestant or tylenol. Cuz frankly when I am really sick and baby is so stuffy they can’t nurse at all I am so not pumping and syringe feeding.
Oh and for teething 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of sugar. Yeah sugar is bad for you but it is a really effective pain reliever. Also sugar (honey if old enough) can cure coughs.
Dark chocolate for diarrhea:
However if my kids were really sick and not getting better then I would of course use any treatment that might work -including antibiotics (even though god knows once you take them once).
PS yeah antibiotics aren’t the only treatment for strep, in fact I had chronic strep throat for almost a year and no antibiotic would touch it.
When I stopped treatment completely, took tonnes of garlic, vitamin C, honey, ginger and cayenne and let it work itself out it finally went away. Sure I was miserable for a week with a horrible sore throat but that’s better than. Get bad sore throat, take antibiotics, stop, get yeast infection, a week later get sore throat, take different antibiotic for longer, repeat.
We’ve been really lucky with our son, or other people have just been really unlucky. I know he’s only 15 months old, but we have only had to give him any “medicine” once. He had surgery on his eyes at 9 months old an in addition to the gas and anesthesia from the surgery he needed an antibiotic for his eyes. For us there was no compromising. His eyes were very prone to infection for about a week as he was healing, so using an alternative was out of the question. It was just too risky with a baby that always has his hands in everything, his hands in his eyes, and the recovery from the surgery.
Besides that we have only had one major fever from roseola that we needed to treat with an otc fever reducer. While we would have been okay with out it, it was much more effective than cool compresses, plus it helped him drink a bit more water, which was great.
I dont get into all the herbs and things like that but I do believe that the body can heal itself way better then any antibiotic thought about… my fiance believes everything should be treated with antibiotics, I beg to differ… we usually get sick with the same illness at the same time, and I’m always the first one to get better, when he’s pumping himself full of medication! I didn’t feel this way until I took a microbiology class in college, and I had a teacher who was against doctors, he said that usually the antibiotics you are prescribed at the doctors arent even the correct one for your illness… the doctor usually sticks to one kind, and gives it to every sick patient that walks through the door… if they dont take a culture, or swab your mouth to figure out exactly what type of illness you have then the chances are VERY high that the antibiotic your prescribed isn’t even the right one… ever notice your doc tells you to come back in ten days if you dont feel better?? Thats because your body has the ability to fight off most viruses within ten days… if the virus persists past ten days then thats when to seek medication! My sons doctor feels the same way I do… he uses the old term “let it run it’s course” I will give my son tylenol… but anything else I try to stay away from unless he’s really sick, which I havent had to deal with yet, thank god!
same goes for your baby…..only natural safe remidies…unless they are severly ill or dying stay away from antibiotics! most of the time little sicknesses go away on their own.
