Has anyone else noticed that the quality of garlic has gone downhill lately?

I’ve tried 3 different grocery stores. The garlic seems to be old & gone halfway bad. Anyone else had this problem in recent months? Any ideas on what would cause the problem – for example, is there a problem with the garlic crop in CA?

ours is lovely but were not in CA, whatever that is…..

It’s probably just old – the local garlic in my market is wonderful and will stay firm until about spring of 09. Try to find some at a farmers market – the hard neck variety usually is great!

The California garlic growing season is over, but garlic stored properly should still be relatively fresh.

I have also noticed a lot of really sad garlic in the markets. Personally, I think that markets are just delaying turning over their stock. They routinely throw out the stale stuff and order in some fresh stuff that has been properly stored under ideal conditions. I think they are delaying it to save money.

There is good garlic out there. I saw some just the other day. I grabbed about 4 heads of it!

A lot of what you are being offered is not from CA – it is from China!
