How can you tell garlic is old?

I keep a bunch of garlic in my cupboard, and there are some bunches I haven’t used in over 6 months. The cupboard is nice and dry and dark, and when I look at the garlic, there isn’t much mold or bruising anywhere, just a little wrinkling and some very small sprouts at the top. When is it time to toss away your garlic?

Probably its time to get some new garlic! One sign of the aging stuff is that it begins to shrink and dry out in its wrapping! When it grows sprouts, you can still use it, but the flavor isn’t as pungent.

As long as its not mouldy, you can use it, although it’s pretty pointless if its dryed out. If it is shooting, plant it in the garden, and you will have some nice freshly grown garlic next year, and it will help keep the pests away.

when it goes all mouldy and smells kinda funny…..
also when u peel it there are yellowish-sorta stuff on it….
but i advise u to buy them fresh , maybe once a week

garlic”s color is white. when it looks brownish or even grayesh it is old. you can still use it if grayish looking but it isn’t as tasteful and throw it away if it is brown.

Garlic is old when it sprouts or when the head is no longer tightly compacted.

If it is sprouting it is old and has lost most of it’s flavor. When buying garlic look for a nice compact head, it the cloves are beginning to seperate it’s not that fresh.

press them, if they are not firm, they are old

spouting

wrinkled looking after you peel

yellowish

spots

The pods should be crisp and moist. If they bend and seem dry you can still use them, but you will need more as they have lost some of the flavor.

Better me safe than sorry. BUY NEW GArlIC

the pod begins to sprout….

You should be alright with your Garlic ! I keep using “my” Garlic, even it has Sprout’s on it !

When they shrink and sprout is the time to toss. I peel my garlic and put in a jar of oil in the fridge. It keeps good for a long time that way, and you have some nice garlic flavoured oil for frying steak..Yummy

When u see greenish spots on it or when it smells really, really, really bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Toss it if the cloves are not firm and there are sprouts.

Botulism is prevalent with garlic. Don’t even think about using old garlic!!!!

if its sprouting, it’s time to go. You can tell when garlic is past the “fresh” stage when the cloves become a little less firm, and seem to be dry. A fresh clove will be firm from tip to base and will still have most of it’s oils left.
