How does Thai basil taste different than Italian sweet basil?

Can Thai basil be used for the same purposes as regular basil? (added to pizza, spaghetti sauce, pesto etc.)? Or does it have it’s own flavor suitable only for Asian cooking?

It’s close enough unless the person eating it is really discriminating.

We’ve used Italian basil in Thai curry – it works pretty good. It’s a little milder than Thai, so more can be used.

thai basil has a hint of peppermint!

It has its own favor. The taste and smell is different. The taste is stronger than Italian sweet basil. In Thailand, we use it on Pizza sometimes but that’s only to say that it’s Thai flavor. Wouldnt hurt if you want to try something new though.
