how long does black pepper last?
i have a can of “always save” brown pepper. it expired in jan 4 2000. i used it in hamburgers is it safe to eat?

its safe — just loses its flavor.

it should be safe, but probably doesn’t taste of anything by now.
If it’s ground pepper, chuck it away, you may as well use ground cardboard when it’s that old. Get whole peppercorns and a grinder, they last longer and it’s more fun to use… so you’ll use it more often and won’t have problems with expiry dates!
WOW! you don’t make many Burgers do you? I believe if it’s been kept in a dry place it should be good, hold on, is it already ground?
Tough call. All spice deteriorate over time. I replace all my spices if not used up every year
