How long should I take Fenugreek & Blessed Thistle for milk production?
I’ve been taking Fenugreek & Blessed Thistle for about 10 days now to increase my milk supply. It has worked very well, but I don’t know if I am supposed to continue taking it to keep the supply going or stop taking it because my milk production is where I want it. By the way, in case it makes a difference, I was unable to get my son to latch so I am exclusively pumping. Thanks.

I’m in the EXACT situation. From what I understand, most women can take it for a boost and then stop. I asked a lactation consultant this question and she recommended that I continue taking it.
I would slowly stop using it because, it can cause over production and the problems that can come with that. I had the same problem with not getting my baby to latch. I stayed in the hospital until I got it. It takes a little bit of forcing on only on the baby’s feeding schedule not yours. Sorry, that it didn’t work out for you. You can keep trying if you so desire it. It is possible to get things going after a while. You may actually still be able to breast feed.
Once your supply has reached the desired level you can stop taking it.
My son was in the NICU for 9 days and came home on a bottle. I, too, was not able to get him to latch on. I found that pumping and feeding him the breastmilk in the bottle was a great solution (especially with a school age child who is on the go!) My ped. advised that I could stay on the Fenugreek as long as I was nursing. She stayed on it herself while she nursed her twins. By the way, I tried the breast again when he was 2 1/2 months and with just a little practice he took right to it. So, now I pump in the daytime and nurse for his one night feeding. It works really well! Good luck!
