How long shourld a basil plant grow before I can expect to use the basil leaves?

I am growing a basil plant indoors on the kitchen counter. I snipped the tops of the plant, thinking that is what I should do. I do see some leaves that are dark green, like basil, but some are also lighter green. Any idea on how long I should wait to use the fresh basil leaves?

I grow it outdoors. It typically flowers in about 3 months. You can use the leaves at any time. Just don’t strip the plant and kill it! The plant itself is good for 1 season. I find that it can go another season but it doesn’t do as well as the 1st time around. The leaf color just shows how much nutrition the leaf is getting. The darker ones might have more flavor but I never been picky.
