How to prepare poppy seeds for planting?

I want to plant and grow poppies this season. I heard that poppy seeds need to go through a winter before growing. Is this true? How do I get them to grow this season?

I’ve always just thrown down the seeds and watered.

Hi:
Poppy seeds grow best in warmer climates. This spice doesn’t germinate or grow well in frost prone locations. I will link you to the spice and herb section of my website. There is a page called, Seeds from basic spices create great culinary dishes. In this article is some information on the poppy seed and drying it. I hope this will help some. In this section is also an article on herb growing from seeds. This may also give you some ideas.

I will also link you to the site map as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can get any other tips or tecnhiques that may help you out! Good luck to you and have a great day!

Two weeks before your last frost date.
Frost dates:

Water the soil,
scatter the seeds,
cover with a net of some sort so birds will not eat seeds.
Keep moist until seeds start to grow.
Water as needed.

I soak my poppy seeds for a day before proceeding like Joanne has suggested. After the first bloom they seem to have reseeded themselves.

Good Growing!!
