If I cant get fresh basil, how much dry basil should I use in a recipe?

I am making a pasta dish that calls for 1-1/2 cup fresh basil. We live in the middle of nowhere and I cant get fresh basil. How much dry can I substitute?

Use the same amount called for in the recipe.

Depends how much u like basil. Dry basil doesnt give much taste to the receipe as much as fresh would.

A couple of tbs’s..If you put the dry basil in a ungreased or oiled frying pan and heat it up dry at medium heat you will release the oils and you will smell it .It will give off more and better flavor..

I could be mistaken but I think you use 1/2 of the dried since it is more potent check that out .. too much basil can kill dish

I grow my own basil, Rosemary, lavendar, etc, easy to do. Try it, follow instructions. Dried really has no pungent to it!

you can also use fresh parsley! use as at least 2 cips

You should only consider using a third of the dried basil.

Dried herbs/spices are far more potent than the fresh variety. At most, use a third of whatever the recipe calls for.

The rule of thumb for fresh to dried herbs is to use 1/3 of the amount of fresh called for in the recipe. The standard ratio for fresh to dried herbs is 1 tbsp. of fresh to 1 tsp. of dried. You would need 1/2 cup of dried basil for your recipe. There will be a distinct difference in the flavor when using dried rather than fresh, especially with large amounts like those in your recipe. If you don’t like it with the dried basil, I would recommend trying it again with fresh before making a final decision.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Shauna
