If you eat a poppy seed bagel, will it show up as an opiate on a drug test?
In school, we are doing a debate on drug testing of students. My team is for drug testing, and one of the opposing side’s arguement is inaccuracy. I need a good argument, and I know they will definetely use the poppy seed example.

It could show up. It usually doesn’t though. It depends on the type of drug test.

Yes. When they test you at work, they tell you not to eat poppy seeds the day before.
It used to be that yes this could happen, though eventually they changed the amount needed to be considered a positive test because too many people were complaining about this… Obviously you should still avoid eating poppy seeds before a drug test though, just in case..

i am not sure how the tests are today but a girl i knew who had eaten a ton of poppy seed bagels that week tested positive for opiates. she was not using drugs at the time.
You would need to eat around 10 bagels for it to happen.

Yes it does but you really have to eat a good number of poppy seed bagels. This is not an urban legend just check with snopes, but it does require the person to eat like a dozen bagels or down an entire bag of poppy seeds. Drug tests can be slightly inaccurate, expensive(varying by type of test ex. pee or hair), and they don’t test for all drugs. I know the hair test that a certain company uses doesn’t detect at least 2 types of drugs.
a drug has to pass through you and then the metabolite is tested poppy seed dont have opium i think you can forget excuses .. get hair razor
