Is garlic powder and garlic salt the same thing?

This may be a dumb question but I need to know for my dinner tonight. For the baked bbq chicken recipe I found online it says to use garlic powder. Can I substitute with garlic salt? Thanks!

yes but do NOT add more salt

powder has no salt and garlic salt is meant to be used without adding additional salt

Just do not add table salt to the recipe along with the garlic salt.

One is just powdered garlic the other is granulated salted garlic.

nope.

If you use garlic powder you will also need salt (if it’s called for)
if you use garlic salt, don’t use salt. :)

You could substitute the garlic salt BUT leave out the salt the recipe calls for. Then do a taste test and make any adjustments.

They are not the same and if you use the garlic salt you will be unable to detirmine the amount of garlic that you have actually put into the food, becasue alot of the garlic salt is…. well salt.

Only thing is you do use garlic salt do not use a lot, it is extremely salty.. I refuse to use garlic salt, bc of it being so salty

NO, hence the name difference

Garlic powder is very simple: it’s just dehydrated garlic cloves that have been ground to a powder. Some of the high quality brands you can buy are just that, pure garlic.

Not all of the garlic powder on the market is pure. Sometimes artificial ingredients are added to “improve” the color or flavor. As always, it’s worth checking the ingredients before you buy.

Sometimes garlic powder is included in other dried spice blends in the stores. The most common of these is garlic salt which is usually just salt plus powdered garlic. Obviously if you’re using the powder as an alternative seasoning in order to cut down on your salt intake, there isn’t much point using garlic salt!

NO, they are not the same thing. I ruined several meals before I realized this. Garlic salt is salt that is flavoured with garlic. Garlic powder is dried powdered garlic.

garlic salt already has salt mixed in garlic powder has no salt mixed in just use what the recipe calls for

No, they are not the same thing. You can substitute, but you can’t make an equal substitution. Since substituting say 1 tsp. of garlic salt for 1 tsp. of garlic powder will make your recipe to salty simply because you can’t determine the ratio of salt to garlic in the garlic salt. Since it’s so salty, it’s safe to say that there’s more salt in it than garlic. By using less than what the recipe calls for, you may sacrifice a bit of the flavor, but that would be better than being to salty. In my opinion, it’s always better to use the powdered versions of garlic, onion, and celery rather than the salted version because you can control how much salt you will use in your recipe.

big difference. taste may need salt
