Is it possible to produce opium from the common poppy?
Some friends of mine said that they got “high” from poppy plants grown in the backyard. I’m in California so it was probably a California poppy.

Opium is the product of a special type of red poppy. I know that they are illegal to grow in some places. Also, not every red poppy yields opium. Check out wikipedia. They probably have a better answer there.
no, it has to be a certain type of poppy.
Only the opium poppy produces the chemical compound.
Those who try can feel high off pure air. It’s all in the mind-set, you know?
I think there is some opium in the California poppy but the amount is very tiny. There are other poppies you can grow in California that have a little more, but not nearly as much as the opium poppy. I have heard of people making opium from poppies that are legal here, but just as a sort of experiment, not very practical.
Your friends’ backyard poppy does have some opium in it, but the amount is very small indeed. They’d have had to consume two acres or so to get high so I doubt they did.
Unless, of course, they imported opium poppy seeds and grew that. It does look different from common poppy, though.
