My 4 year old keeps peeing in the bed?
My four year old is about to be five in July. She keeps peeing in her anywhere we lay her for naps or bedtime. We just purchase a new mattress for her (twin) and us (queen) and she has already used it on both many times. We put pads down but she seems to get off the pads. I know there’s mattress covers to place under the covers but she’s allergic to them. What can I do. Should I put her back in pull-ups only when she’s sleeping (then again, with the amount of pee she lets out it will probably leek through the pull-up) what are our options for this very major problem?
We are washing 2-4 bedding sets per day because of this.
Oh, and we do wake up several times in the middle of the night wake her and take her to the bathroom but this too does not work.
Last thing. I know some might say stop giving her drinks after a certain time and we tried that but sometimes she cries because she want water due to being thirsty and who am I to say that she not thirsty and deny her water.
Also, some people like her have sensitive to chemicals especially to PLASTIC!

Have her go to the bathroom before she lays down,if she says she doesn’t have to go have her go in and try. We have been having the same problem with our 4 year old son (will be 5 in may). We have him go before bed and he usually makes it through the night. Also nothing to drink for a half hour to an hour before bed. Good Luck
What exactly is she allergic to in the pads? There are plastic matress covers, there are washable cloth pads with a plastic lining. Maybe try to take her to the bathroom in the middle of her nap.
Have you taken her to the doctor?
If you wake her up several times a night and make her go to the potty, it might help, or she might just have weak bladder muscles, and not be able to control them when she is sleeping. Cut off all fluids an hour before she goes to bed, wake her every four hours and make her pee. Try that for about two months, and if it doesn’t work, take her to the doctor and make sure she doesn’t have a bladder infection.
I know you said shes allergic to the matress covers, but my cat had a real issue with peeing on the bed. My mom bought some nice pads I believe from Kmart (martha stewart brand maybe) thats aren’t uncomfortable and loud, actually like a soft feeling. Then we put regular sheets over them and you couldn’t even tell they were there. Maybe that could do the trick? And my boyfriends brother still wears pullups to bed and he’s almost 8. His sister had the same problem too with wetting the bed till an older age. I’m not sure why though . . .
Oh wow you have tried everything I was going to suggest to you. Those things should definitely work especially if you are limiting fluid intake, waking her up , etc. No , no no you should definitely not put her back in pull ups. Pull ups are a crutch and she is far too old for them. I suggest taking her to the dr. and seeing what they have to say about it. She may have a uti (urinary tract infection) ( little girls can get them from wiping the wrong way and from bubble baths. ) or a bladder problem and if she has either of these the dr. will prescribe you some pills to help it. My cousin was wetting the bed until she was 15 years old and my aunt took her to the dr. to see what was the problem because it was only happening during nap or bedtime. They gave her some pills to help her hold it while she was sleeping because her bladder was too weak to do it on her own. Hope this helps.
There are disposable pads that you might want to consider with a waterproof backing you can use and toss . Pullups are an option…or the new Overnites might be better since she is an older child-they should hold more. Some kids just have a harder time holding it during the night. She might just be a sound sleeper. If it is every night, you might want to mention it to your pediatrician that she is having this problem. Does she urinate a lot during the day too? You said she is thirsty…I might be grasping at straws, but those can be signs of blood sugar problems (excesssive thirst and urinating a lot). Hopefully she just has an immature bladder that will catch up to her soon.
Your child is not-so-surprisingly yet to fully develop her muscles. It happens. One of mine had that problem until 6 or 8. When they sleep deeply, there is so much relaxation that they are unable to hold the urine.
It’s a real mistake to make her feel embarrassed about wetting when it is a developmental issue beyond her control.
It causes emotional “issues” that will backfire over several years to come.
Daily problems require daily solutions.
–The “pads” we used do come in full crib-size. The flannel covered rubber pads. At fabric stores it can be purchased by the yard and cut to size. To be layed down either under or over the sheet. **I used to lay the pad down first, then an extra heavy bath towel in the “target area” under the sheet.
–You can get the hospital disposable bed pads (blue ones) in the drug store. These are absorbent and made for adults – so should work fine on top of her sheets.
–On my own king-size bed, we use a “waterproof” mattress pad, the plastic is on the back, and a fully quilted top completely covers the plastic, so there is no contact with it.
–Your problem, though seems to be on a regular basis at this time, so let’s treat it as you would any other daily problem — use the pull-ups. They do come in larger sizes for older kids with this very problem.
– Consider giving your daughter somewhat less to drink in the hour before she lays down to sleep.
– Please just treat changing the wet things as “routine” , without ever “blaming her or making her feel like a baby”
– Some children with bladder infections, or are experiencing stress (hearing you argue, moving frequently, who have been sexually molested etc.) can have bedwetting problems for long periods of time. It would do well to have your child checked by your Dr.
I don’t know if you have a Anna’ Linens near your home, but they carry a mattress pad cover that’s larger than the mattress itself. It’s not the plastic thing and there is no way that she can get off of it while she’s sleeping. I had one for my baby and it worked perfect. It costs around 9 bucks here in California. I have several concerns about your 4 year old. Is she a heavy sleeper? Is she dreaming that she’s in the restroom? Have she been examined by a doctor to make sure her bladder isn’t relaxing too much when she sleeps? If she is potty trained and this is going on, something is going on in her little mind. Please have her checked out to make sure it’s not anything emotional going on with her. My son went through this for 11 years. He was potty trained at 15months. But when my brother died, my son was five years old. My son started wetting the bed and getting disruptive. He changed big time. He just stopped wetting the bed two years ago. He’s a totally different person now. He’s 18 years old now. Hope all is well with your baby.
have her go to the bathroom before naps or bed
and at night when you put her in her bed let her go to sleep
and then before u go to bed wake her up and take
her to to bathroom again
