Preserving Orange Clove Pomanders?
I am making Pomanders, the kind where you cover oranges with whole cloves. I have read that to preserve them, you need to shake them in a bag with Orris Root (and cinnamon and nutmeg powder for added scent). I was wondering if there are other herbs or extracts or spices that you can use to preserve them. I want them to last a long time as it is a lot of work to cover the oranges in cloves and I would like to enjoy the beauty and aroma as long as possible.

Longer Lasting Pomanders
To make your pomanders last longer, cover your citrus fruit in whole cloves, then place in a large bowl and cover with the optional cinnamon/spice mixture. Allow pomanders to “cure” for several weeks before attaching ribbon hangers. These “cured” pomanders will last for months, even years. They make delightful gifts are especially nice for bringing fresh scent to closets.
The process you are using is the only way I have ever made them. Each year I renew the fragrance by shaking them in the mixture again. I do seal them in plastic bags when they are in storage ( in a cool dry place )
I’ve used both methods mentioned above but find the cheapest way is to dry them for a week or so in kitty litter. It absorbs all of the excess moisture in the fruit slowly and allows the orange rind to become a beautiful bronze color without coating the cloves and getting stuck (Just use a soft blush brush to sweep it away). Ones I made using this method years ago lasted longer than with the orris root or spice method and I simply refresh the smell with cinnamon/clove oil, a dab will do ya.
