Some easy biology question?

1. A thistle funnel contains a mixture of sugar and red ink solution. The bottom of the funnel is covered with cellophane paper. The funnel is immersed into a beaker of water.

a) Why did the water in the beaker turn red?
b) Explain the changes in the height of the liquid in the funnel’s column.
c) Explain what would happen to the rate of change of the height if air temperature is warmer.

2. As part of an experiment, a leek was cut into a plant tissue strip.

a) Why did the tissue strip curve when freshly cut off from the stem?
b) Explain why the tissue shrank in size and became thinner when placed in 10% sucrose solution.
c) How would you extend the experiment to get a more accurate estimate of the cell sap concentration?
d) What is the cell sap concentration?

3. Explain the following statement. “Animal cells require energy for active transport”.

Please label your answers and please give clear details. Thank you.

1. The red ink passes through the cellophane from a high concentration to a lower one. Its molecules are small enough to go through along with the water molecules. The water column will decrease in height as the water leaves. It would increase since the diffusion of water will increase from the beaker into the air as the temperature increases.

2. a. water loss from the cells caused them to shrink. b. water was lost from the cells since they were placed in a hypertonic solution. Water always moves toward a hypertonic solution. c. Set up a series of hypertonic solutions measuring different dilutions of sucrose and keep the strips (same length and weight) in them for the same amount of time and weigh them.
d.?
3. Active transport requires the movement of materials from a low concentration to one of a higher one. This is like swimming up a hill. Energy is needed by the cell to move these molecules or they will not make it up.
