Substitue for fresh Marjoram?

I want to make a recipe for Chicken Pot Pie in which one of the main ingredients is fresh marjoram. It seems to be sold out of every supermarket in my neighborhood. What could I use as a suitable substitute?

fresh oregano

Try substituting with basil, savory, or thyme.

Thyme for a chicken dish would work the best, more appropriate for poultry.

Definitely, Oregano is fine – marjoram is related to oregano and most people would be hard pressed to tell the difference! I not only cook a lot, but I grow my own herbs!

Oregano or Thyme.

One option is dried marjoram, which is much easier to find than fresh. Another option is oregano, either fresh or dried. Marjoram and oregano are quite similar, but I think oregano is a bit stronger, so I would use a smaller amount. You can also use a mixture of sage, savory and parsley. The classic herb combination for turkey stuffing in the US is marjoram, savory, sage and parsley. Any combination of these would work nicely for the chicken pot pie.

Dried, use half as much.
