Swollen red eyelids and hives?
Hi,
I woke up with super red, swollen eyelids and hives all over. My hands are also a bit swollen. I did notice after I had dinner last night that my eyes started to itch, and I developed a tiny swollen spot on the corner of my eye. When I went to bed last night, my back was really hurting. I couldn’t tell if it was my kidneys or a spasm. I think it must be an allergy, but I am not sure to what. I don’t have insurance, so I can’t go to the doctor. I HAVE been sick with a cold for a couple days and also started my period. I have never had a reaction like this before.
So, I am going to list the ingredients to the two new foods I had last night. If any one an help me, I will love you forever! I’m afraid to experience this again, or go into anaphylactic shock…
A Taste of Thai Pad Thai Sauce:
Palm Sugar, Tamarind Juice, Water, Shallot, Sweet Radish, Garlic Salt, Soybean Oil, Maltodextrin, Miso, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Paprika Oleoresin, Yeast Extract, Citric Acid, Alpha-Tocopherol, Caramel Powder, Chili Oleoresin
Trader Joe’s Handmade Chocolate Ganache:
Semi-Sweet Chocolate, Cream, Water, Sugar, Canola Oil and/or Safflower Oil, Unbleached Flour, Whole Eggs, Cocoa Powder, Eggs Yolks, Invert Sugar, Baking Soda, Lemon Juice, Distilled Vinegar, Natural Vanilla Flavor, Baking Powder
It also says that it’s made on equipment shared with peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish.
I have had exposure to all these ingredients before. I eat a lot of soy, eggs and nuts, but I never eat shellfish or fish unless its a base (like clam oil in spring rolls or the like).

You could be allergic to anything listed or nothing. It could have been a bug bite. Start taking benadryl, according to directions on the packaging. If you feel like your cannot breath GO TO AN ER IMMEDIATELY as you will have a further symptom of the hives swelling the inside if your throat.
Your allergic reaction was caused by the maltodextrin. Please spread the word about this mysterious and dangerous food additive, and avoid at all costs in the future. Check food labels thoroughly.
