Your garden will only be as good as your soil. If you have heavy clay soil, work in lots of compost or organic material to loosen the soil up.
Don’t over plant. The most common mistake is to plant too many veggies for the space you have. You will get better production by having the right number of plants for the space you have.
Take notice of the requirements of each plant and don’t plant veggies with opposing requirements next to each other. It makes it difficult to care for them. For example, You don’t want tomatos and corn next to each other because Nitrogen is bad for Tomato’s, but Corn needs lots of nitrogen.
Also take into consideration the sun. You don’t want to plant a short plant like pepper where it will be shaded from the sun by something taller, like Corn.
get your soil tested to see the chemical balance. i live in sw michigan, and plan on planting this weekend. im doing tomatoes bell peppers and cucumbers.
You should contact the Master Gardener program in your county. They can be a big asset for novice gardeners.
