What can I do to spice up my chili?
I am making chili and using the McCormick chili packet. What can I do to spice it up a little. It’s a little bland. I am also using ground turkey.
The majority suggest adding more chili powder and cumin. How much…a tsp. of each? I really have no idea. Thanks!

Add a chopped jalapeno or add crushed red pepper flakes or a little of each
You could also add a can of RO-TEL dices tomatoes with chiles, they have medium & mild varieties
Add some cumin and more chili powder. If you want heat, add a little cayenne.
Add sauteed green pepper, onions and garlic to the mixture. Make sure to add some canned tomatoes either diced in a puree sauce or just some tomato puree (puree is thicker then regular sauce and thinner then paste). Add additional spices like hot sauce, black pepper, and chile powders.
if it’s bland, you need to add salt. If you want heat, you can add just about anything with heat like
Red Hot sauce
Cayenne
Habenero Powder
Habenero peppers
Jalapeno peppers
crushed red pepper
black pepper
Add Cumin, crushed Red Pepper flakes, fresh ground Grains of Paradise, Oregano, and Marjoram.
This is what I would do:
– add cumin and chili powder
– add a can of green chilies
– add some chopped jalapeno peppers
you can add some:
chili powder
cayanne pepper
crushed red pepper flakes
smoked paprika
just a few suggestions, you can also cook your turkey by seasoning it while its cooking to give the meat a little flavor. i use ground turkey for a lot of things and it really doesn’t have a flavor to it, so try seasoning it up, you could also put some fresh garlic in with the turkey and cook the turkey in EVOO.
Add one or more or all of the following:
Some fresh garlic and onions.
More Chili powder (or ground cumin and cayenne pepper)
Chopped Fire Roasted Green Chiles from a can.
Some Tabasco red pepper sauce
And the secret ingredient about a tablespoon of grated Ibarra Chocolate to round out the flavors.
To the second question of how much chili powder or cumin, just add a lil at a time, and keep tasting it, until you get the taste how you want it.
You don’t want to ever dump a bunch of something into your pot at once, without being sure. You can always add more ya know.
Buy a can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce in the Mexican section. Take one, chop it up and add one tablespoon of the sauce. Now that’s the way to spice it up. It’s delicious.
You can also use different meats like lamb or pork, or even chopped steak. If it’s slow-cooked, it makes all the difference.
Oooh….you need some chipotle in adobo for your chili…those are smoked jalapenos in a delectable sauce. Most grocery store chains sell them in the ethnic food aisle…San Marcos is a very good brand…Goya also sells them. A little goes a long way for these beauties…you can freeze whatever you don’t use.
Try some salsa verde or other spicy salsa.
Also some chili peppers
I like to add a few finely chopped jalapenos and some tabasco sauce to mine. I also used the diced tomatoes with the green chilis already added.
I do add cumin and chili powder to mine. You could start with teaspoon of each, but I normally add a few teaspoons – depending on the size of the batch. Wait a while after you add and taste – if you add too quickly, before it melds in, you may end up with too much.
Simmer, Simmer, Simmer!
Cajun Possum Chili – NUCLEAR HOT !!!
Ingredients:
Tomatoe Sauce (depends on possum)
1 tsp.-1 cup Chili Powder (Depends on Taste and possum)
1 Large possum or 3 small
1 large pot or two large ones if the first isn’t enough.
5-10 chili peppers (depends on taste and possum)
5-10 red peppers (depends on taste and possum)
5-10 jalapenio peppers (depends on taste and possum)
How ever much Cayenne Pepper you like, it depends on your taste and possum.
1 tsp. Black Pepper
a pinch of salt
Chili Beans for extra flavor
And whatever other ingredients that are hot and spicy you would like to add.
Directions:
1. Skin possum(s)
2. Remove internal organs, head, claws, and bones. There is no flavor or use for these. But if you want to add them, Go ahead.
3. Put some tomatoe sauce in the pot(s). Then add the possum.
4. Chop peppers
5. Skip step four if you don’t want chopped peppers; it doesn’t matter.
6. Put the rest in and let set for a long dang while.
7. Before serving make sure you have enough bread, Milk, and Toliet paper for after dinner.
8. Serve. Enjoy
Ground turkey needs twice the seasoning as ground beef or pork. It’s easiest to NOT use the seasoning packet. For 1 to 1-1/2 lbs. of ground beef, use 1/4 c. chili powder, about 2 TB paprika; 2 tsp. cumin; some minced garlic, salt & pepper. I actually use regular chili powder, plus serrano & chipolte chili powder; and regular and smokey paprika. Don’t forget to add fresh chopped cilantro on top when it’s done…….
