What is a clove of Garlic. When a recipe says “4 cloves garlic minced”, is that 4 whole Garlics or what?

Or, does it mean when a Garlic plant is taken apart, do you use each part of a single Garlice as 1 clove. 4 whole Garlic plants seems a lot for a pan of chili. Thanks.

u buy Garlic by the “head” at the store. each piece u break of is a clove. use four pieces and chop them up. u can also buy a jar of minced garlic and go by spoonfuls when converting….ie: 4 cloves=4 tsp which would be ur cereal spoon

Yes. A clove is the white bulb which is peeled and sectioned. You do not use whole garlic plants. Your recipe calls for 4 garlic bulb sections.

Take apart the big piece of garlic (it’s called a fist) The little bits inside are the cloves) If you don’t want to use four, you do not have to. Recipes are not carved in stone and can be changed to your liking. I do it all the time.

When you buy fresh garlic at the store, before you use it you break of the “sections”, and thats a clove. You then peel it and use a garlic press (normally), although some call for the whole clove. If you use a press on it, you don’t really get all THAT much garlic.

what everybody else said but just a little side note….. sometimes you’ll see a clove/section/piece of garlic referred to as a toe of garlic.

A clove of garlic is one of the lil’ sections in a single garlic plant. When you buy garlic from the supermarket, your buying the whole plant, or called a “fist”. When you look at this “fist”, you’ll notice that it is sectioned by lot “cloves”. Your chili requires 4 of these sections, or cloves. An easy way to peel and chop the cloves are to take them one by one, then squash them with either your hand or your knife, then peel away the bits of skin and chop the squashed garlic clove. If you prefer the hard way, then take one clove of garlic, cut off the ends, and peel it, like you would peel a banana, only this is harder, then chop it up. The upside here is that the chopped garlic clove looks much better because its round.

I hope I helped! :D Your chili’s bound to be great!
