What is ther relation between onion size and its storability?
I am studying my Ph. D. and want to go for grading of onion. Some of literature I found tempted to say that size grading is necessary for its quality and price. But is there any relation with storage. How it affects during storage.

One comment a “What is ther relation between onion size and its storability?”
From personal experience with the Organic Growers Club at my university, the largest onions store very poorly compared to medium-sized onions. I am fairly certain that this is because all the onions are dried for an equal amount of time and the largest ones never dry out fully, leaving them susceptible to fungi and bacteria.
However, you are talking about an industrial setting. What I said wouldn’t matter if you sorted the onions and dealt with the size categories separately. Do they sort onions in processing plants before drying them?
Also, consumers only want onions so big. If the onion is too big, it is difficult to deal with. You may consider taking a pole of what people find to be the ideal onion size. (my guess is that the largest most people want is one that has the diameter of a hamburger bun)
Best of luck with your doctoral work!
