What kind of spices go into homemade chili?
Besides chili powder, of course. I’m making tonight from scratch rather than from the Carol Shelley’s mix. I have all the spices, I’m sure, just need to know the proper amounts. Keep it mild; the 2 year old will eat it if it’s not too spicy.

Measurements depend on the amount of chili you make, but cumin is the second most important spice in chili other than chili powder. Also salt and pepper to taste.
well you already have chili powder, you need some garlic powder and onion powder, also some cumin. don’t worry about measurements. its all to taste. the cayenne pepper is where all the heat comes from. you could leave it out or add it after you take some out for baby. i usually only use those five spices. start with a small amount first and let it all simmer for a few minutes. then taste it. never taste something right after you season it b/c the flavors have to have time to develop. good luck.
1 T chili powder
1 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. garlic powder
dash cinnamon
Salt and Pepper
2 cans tomatoes
1 can tomato sauce
1 can dark red kidney beans
1 can other bean (I like cannelini)
Diced green bell pepper
Small diced onion
Ground beef or turkey
Let it simmer for about 30-45 mins and taste. You might need to re-season. Add a touch more chili powder or cumin.
Garnish with cilantro and sour cream or avocados.
think cumin, paprika, and use different ground chile powders or flakes, such as chipotle , ancho, arbol, or whatever looks good to you
