What kinds of things should I look for when buying mace?

Are there any stores that sell it so I can look before I buy or is online the best way to go?
How much should I expect to pay?
I’m thinking about those little ones that are key-chains but I’m afraid they aren’t as effective or don’t have much mace in them to spray.
How do I know if it is the pump kind or the continuous spray kind? Do they even sell the continuous spray kind?
Any other advice is welcome. Thanks.
I know cars isn’t the right section but I couldn’t find anything else that said anything about safety plus it is going to and from my car that I really want it so it sort of fits.

Whether or not it is legal should be your first consideration. In some states you can go to jail for its possession. That is why pepper sprays are more commonly sold for use as deterrents.

Chances are you won’t use it, so I do not think you need to worry about quantity in the unit. Rather focus on continuous spray. Most bottles should list whether a continuous spray option exists and for how many seconds.

Second feature is % of active ingredient. I suggest comparing and finding the maximum available. However, if you use it and are found guilty of assault, then you will have to bear the cost of any long-term damage the victim sustains. You may want to research potential hazards of damage caused by the more highly toxic mace products.

Lastly, should you use your mace or not, I recommend buying a new one and annually replacing the old product that may be less dependable in a 2nd or 3rd year after purchase. Also be responsible in your disposal of the old unit. Perhaps call your local city hall, fire or police to ask proper method of disposal.

if it’s not in your hand when you need it, it won’t do you any good so make sure you can have it handy. Use the pepper spray type, as for the mace type can be built up to over time exposures. I personally have a resistance to riot gas due to continiuos exposure. read the labels as to use and type. Make real sure to read incase you spray yourself by accident. your local police may have a self defense class as to how to use it.

Usually K-Mart sells Mace that goes in your keychain, which costs $5-6.
They are effective as long as you point them in the right direction and the right place. :) They dont hold as much, but are meant to be small and secretive.
It generally sprays as long as you hold the button down. (Keychain Kind)

In my Kmart, it is located at the very end of one of the car aisles…but you may have to ask an employee.

If you plan on visiting Canada anytime soon, wait to buy Mace. When entering there, it is illegal to have mace and you will have to pull over while they search you whole car–then provide you with a paper saying the mace was destroyed.

As far as US, Im not sure if its illegal anywhere. It wouldnt make much sense though, as most women carry it for protection.
