When a dog is chasing you, will using dog mace on it stop the dog in its tracks or make it more angry?

I’ve been nearly attacked on many occasions by vicious dogs, and so I’ve grown up to be petrified of all dogs – big or small, calm or energetic.

I recently saw “dog mace” at a running store which is meant for protection in an attack/chase, but I’m apprehensive about ever using it if needing it because I’ve been told it may not work, and make a dog even angrier.

Does anybody know if dog mace works or not? What is the deciding factor of whether it works (ie size, nature, quantity)?

It often works, but of course there’s no guarantee. Mostly what it is intended to do is stop the dog with pain long enough for you to get away.

My mother-in-law used it to break up an attack by an unleashed aggressive dog on her dog that was leashed and non-aggressive. Her dog got part of it, but she was able to stop the attack long enough to get them both away. Her dog would have been dead without it.

It’s sad you’ve had so many bad experiences. Most dogs are wonderful and mine are a special part of my life.

I would believe it would work because it works on coyotes. I dont blame you for being scared of dogs. I would just use if you had nothing else on you. You can however shoot a dog but i wouldnt really recommend it unless its life threatening

I don’t see why mace wouldn’t work. When I was about 12, I put a can of spray paint in the bottle holder on my bicycle in order to deal with a pack of dogs. It worked rather well although looking back, I don’t know if it permanently injured the animals or not.

It’s not meant to stop a dog from attacking you, but rather to stop them in their tracks long enough for you to try and get away. The pain will startle them, and yes, could possibly just anger the dog more.

See if you can find any self-defense classes nearby. I know the class I took, had a section on how to defend yourself against a dog.

I don’t think it would make the dog more angry–I think it would make the dog fear you.

Another thing you could get is a blowhorn. They let out such a high sound that it would probably scare the dog off, or at least startle it. That way if one thing doesn’t work, you can try the other.
