When does ground cinnamon expire?
I work at starbucks and my manager and I were cleaning out the backroom in preperation for the christmas madness, and we couldnt figure out when this bottle of ground cinnamon expired. So, she wanted to throw it away, I decided Id take it and see when it expires. It says it was produced May 9 of this year.
Thanks!

Even if it is old if it taste good it can still be use the problem with old spices is their taste becomes less potent over time but they are still safe for consumption. Nutmeg lasts forever if it taste and smells good it’s fine.
Cinnamon can last for years in the cupboard without losing its taste
Ground spices, kept in dry, cool, dark conditions can keep up to three years. Spices don’t go rancid or spoil like other foods do.
I personally, would never use a pre-ground dry spice older than six months because of the loss of potency and complexity of flavor, but being a chef will do that for you.
The thing with spices is that they actually don’t expire! They just lose their flavor.
You can expect something like ground cinnamon to last a good 2 to 3 years if it’s kept in a tightly sealed container in the proper cabinet area, which should be cool and dry.
So, give the bottle a shake and then let the spice settle. Give it a sniff, and if you can still smell it, it’s still good then! Just probably not as strong as it once was.
Whole spices that are not ground up last for 4 years, keeping a stronger, more pure scent/flavor. Starbucks should buy whole cinnamon and grind it daily!
As the others have said, it doesn’t really expire, it just loses potency. We have ground cinnamon in our cupboard from when (or even prior to when) we moved in in 1995. It’s still good–Just gotta use a little bit more than normal.
Edit: Same with nutmeg, same with all other spices as far as I know.
I think it’s 1 year for most spices
Most people say to get rid of spices after 6 months to a year. If you use them within the next couple of months, they are most likely okay.
Most spices last for than a year or two. Be sure that the cover is tight. and isw kept close always.
