I am trying to make Kolaches with Poppy Seed Filling but don’t know where to buy it in my area besides having to order it online. Anyone got a place or an idea?

Make It! This is from a Texas Monthly website =)
Poppy seed Filling
3/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 1/2 cups poppy seeds
3/4 cup whole milk
3/4 teaspoon almond extract
Stir together the sugar and cornstarch in a small bowl. Set the bowl aside.
Grind the poppy seeds in a blender with about half the milk. Place the poppy seed mixture and the remaining milk in a large, heavy saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to a simmer and stir in the reserved sugar-and-cornstarch mixture and the almond extract. Simmer, stirring often, until very thick, a matter of a few minutes.
Being a former chef from Canada, I have purchased it and made it a number of times, my suggestion is take a look through your local Yellow Pages under deli’s, bakery’s or ethnic meat market’s, generally if you can find Polish, Hungarian, Ukrainian or a European based place, then they would either have the filling or the ingredients, plum jam, poppy seeds, honey and ground walnuts, a food processor will do the trick, soak the poppy seed in warm water and drain them before making it yourself, this softens the hulls and it puree’s better, just put everything in at once and buzz it until smooth.
You might try the HEB Market Square on Grogans Mill, or maybe ask the owner at the Russian restaurant across from the HEB on Sawdust. If that doesn’t work maybe try a Central Market store in Houston or a Fiesta.
