where can I find mace for baking?

I want to bake a pound cake and it calls for mace. I am taking the recipe from an old cook book that was publishes in 1953. My question is where can I get mace( I have tryed different stores & no one has it) or what can I use instead?

That’s interesting, you might try looking under g for ground mace instead of m for mace in the shops. It’s easy to get in the UK I think. If you can’t find it, try nutmeg which might be similar, it’s from the same plant.

the defination is Nutmeg.

use nutmeg instead.

Mace is basically the same as nutmeg

in this links article it states mace is from nutmeg and tastes similar but stronger..you could substitute recipe with extra nutmeg OR shop online which this link provides,,, or you could try a gourmet or better store like whole foods market

Sainsbury’s and Waitrose certainly stock it….as Ground Mace…. alongside the spices…like nutmeg, mixed spice etc

Or give all your local supermarkets a call…quicker than visiting them all.

Mace is the coating that surrounds the nutmeg. Usually ground for baking but I;ve seen it’s “blades” whole in Asian shops so maybe if your need the baldes you’ll have to visit one.

But if you can’t get it then the other suggestions to use nutmeg aren’t too far off

you want to use ground cloves which are the base for mace.
