Why should you soak poppy seeds before baking?



I have seen many cakes for lemon poppy seed cake…..do you have to soak poppy seeds?

Alot of recipes call for the soaking of the poppy seeds for 30 minutes to overnight in milk,

Does it effect the outcome of the recipe if you don’t soak them???

HELP!!! I do not want to waste my ingredients..

No, its probably to help soak the opium out of them :P

In cartoons and comics, the charecters just become unconcious. Maybe thats the reason.

Yeah, maybe it is to get rid of the opioids. Make sure you don’t have any blood work done any time soon; otherwise, you’ll test positive for opioids.

I don’t know why some recipes call for it, but I never soak and my lemon poppy seed cakes always turn out wonderful!

Not to worry, it’s just to make them more digestable. After they bake they are harder to digest, soaking them in milk before baking softens them.. that’s all.
